ISO 6020/2 and ISO 6022 hydraulic cylinders: how to choose?

Choosing an ISO-standard hydraulic cylinder rather than a custom one gives you a product with well-defined characteristics and makes it easy to source spare parts or interchangeable new cylinders. But how do you choose between the different ISO standards available?

ISO 6020/2 and ISO 6022 define the dimensional criteria for two families of hydraulic cylinders, each with its own characteristics, overall dimensions and mounting styles. ISO 6020/2 covers tie-rod cylinders for pressures up to 160 bar: in the Conforti range, the CD/DK series. ISO 6022 covers cylinders for pressures up to 250 bar: the DP heavy-duty series.

What differs between the two standards

Both standards set overall dimensions, mounting configurations and reference pressure. As a result, two cylinders that comply with the same standard and have the same mounting are interchangeable. However, ISO 6020/2 and ISO 6022 cylinders are not interchangeable with each other. In particular, ISO 6020/2 specifies a design with square heads and tie rods, while ISO 6022 specifies round heads and counterflanges.

The CD/DK tie-rod series is recommended when you need a reliable, easy-to-maintain cylinder with compact dimensions. The bronze bush ensures a long service life for the rod and seals. It is also available as the MD version, for use with magnetic sensors fixed to the tie rods.

The DP series is the right choice when operating pressure can reach 250 bar, in particularly demanding environments, or where there are significant side loads or long strokes. The rod guide bush is made of bronze and the piston has a double bronze guide, designed to withstand unwanted side loads without compromising the cylinder’s service life.

Conforti’s catalogue also includes the HD/HK version. It meets the ISO 6020/2 dimensional and mounting requirements but uses a counterflange design instead of tie rods, which is better suited to long strokes and pressures up to 210 bar.

Every Conforti cylinder is tested in accordance with ISO 10100 at 1.5 times the nominal pressure (240, 315 or 375 bar), guaranteeing product quality.

Industrial applications

The ISO 6020/2 series cover a wide range of industrial applications where compact dimensions, reliability and easy maintenance matter. The tie-rod series also come with electroless nickel plating of the cylinder (NK option) for corrosive environments, and as the MD series with a magnetic piston and sensors mounted on the tie rods. The ISO 6022 series is designed for stamping and forging presses, rolling mills, steelworks hydraulics, heavy machine tools and shearing systems. In the same environments, where continuous position control is required, a servo-cylinder version with a magnetostrictive transducer is available for all series.

Configurator and CAD models

The product configurator lets you select the features of the hydraulic cylinder you need and download the 2D/3D CAD model to check dimensions and mountings yourself.

Assembly kits

Conforti ISO cylinders are also available as assembly kits for anyone who wants to build their own ISO cylinders with quality-tested components. The kits come complete with seals and are always available within a few days of ordering.
